In 1999, Berdene and Petrie Smit had a vision: to start a Christian school where Jesus Christ is recognised as King, and every child is truly seen.
From teaching six children in the spare room of their house, Topolino has grown into a fully‑fledged school serving up to 280 primary learners and potentially 120 pre‑primary barefoot children. Today, Topolino stands strong because of shared responsibility -with parents and communities from Langebaan, Velddrif, Vredenburg and Saldanha helping shape this beacon on the West Coast.
At Topolino, every staff member is passionately committed to honing each child -every “jewel” entrusted to us – to his or her God‑given potential. We teach children to take responsibility for their growth and choices, knowing that we plant the seed and water it – God will make it grow.
The Topolino Bell is one of our most cherished traditions – a symbol of belonging, growth, achievement, and legacy.
Every child who begins their journey at Topolino in Grade 1 is invited to ring the bell, marking the start of an exciting adventure of learning, discovery, and character development. Years later, upon completing Grade 7, they ring the bell once more – a proud celebration of a journey well-travelled within our Love Zone.
The bell also announces special milestones and celebrations throughout the year, building excitement and anticipation as our school community gathers to share in memorable moments.
At Topolino, the bell is treated with honour and respect. It is not rung for amusement, nor is it passed through casually. It represents a meaningful rite of passage, reserved for significant moments in a learner’s journey.
To celebrate those who have left a lasting mark on our school, every Grade 7 learner who completes their primary school journey at Topolino has their name added to the Bell Plaque. The annual Dux learner is also honoured with a place on the plaque, recognising exceptional dedication and achievement.
For every new beginning and every successful farewell, the Topolino Bell stands as a reminder that every child matters, every journey is valued, and every achievement deserves to be celebrated.
Our iconic red gates mark more than the entrance to a school – they mark the entrance to the Topolino Love Zone.
